Global Industrial Robotics Scale and Operating Stock
The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) reported 4,281,585 industrial robots operating in factories worldwide in 2023, an increase of 10% year over year. This is an operational-stock measure, not the number installed during that year. (IFR, “Record of 4 Million Robots in Factories Worldwide”)
Manufacturers installed 541,302 industrial robots worldwide in 2023. That total was 2% below the 2022 record of 552,946 units, but annual installations still exceeded 500,000 units for the third consecutive year. (IFR, “Record of 4 Million Robots in Factories Worldwide”)
The IFR forecast approximately 541,000 industrial-robot installations worldwide for 2024. This is a forecast rather than a realized count, so it should not be combined with the observed 2023 installation total. (IFR, “Record of 4 Million Robots in Factories Worldwide”)
Robotics Industry Data by Region and National Market
Regional installations show where new industrial robots were deployed in 2023:
| Region | 2023 installations | Change from 2022 |
|---|---|---|
| Asia | 382,073 | -6% |
| Europe | 92,393 | +9% |
| Americas | 55,389 | -1% |
Asia accounted for 70% of newly deployed industrial robots in 2023. The regional figures and share come from the IFR’s Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 Industrial Robots. (IFR, “Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 Industrial Robots”)
National markets varied substantially in both scale and annual change:
- China installed 276,288 industrial robots in 2023, representing 51% of the global total, while its operational stock was just under 1.8 million robots.
- Japan installed 46,106 industrial robots in 2023, down 9%, and the United States installed 37,587, down 5%.
- South Korea installed 31,444 industrial robots in 2023, down 1%, while Germany installed 28,355, up 7%.
- India installed 8,510 industrial robots in 2023, up 59%; Canada installed 4,311, up 37%; and Mexico installed 5,832, down 3%.
The five largest national markets—China, Japan, the United States, the Republic of Korea and Germany—supplied 419,780 units, or 78% of global industrial-robot installations in 2023. Country and top-five figures are reported by IFR. (IFR, “Record of 4 Million Robots in Factories Worldwide”; IFR, “Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 Industrial Robots”)
Robot Density Trends in Manufacturing
Robot density measures operational industrial robots relative to manufacturing employees, expressed as robots per 10,000 employees. It is an automation-intensity measure, not a percentage of workers replaced.
Global manufacturing robot density reached 162 robots per 10,000 employees in 2023, while Asia’s average was 182. Asia’s density grew at a 13% compound annual rate from 2018 through 2023. (IFR, “Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 Industrial Robots”)
The IFR’s country density release uses 2022 data. Its regional and leading-country figures were:
| Geography | Year | Robots per 10,000 manufacturing employees |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | 2022 | 208 |
| North America | 2022 | 188 |
| Republic of Korea | 2022 | 1,012 |
| Singapore | 2022 | 730 |
| Germany | 2022 | 415 |
| Japan | 2022 | 397 |
| China | 2022 | 392 |
China’s 2022 density of 392 robots per 10,000 employees was measured against a manufacturing workforce of roughly 38 million. US density rose from 274 to 285 robots per 10,000 employees between 2021 and 2022. (IFR, “Global Robotics Race: Korea, Singapore and Germany in the Lead”)
Industrial Robotics Statistics by Customer Industry
Automotive remained the largest named customer industry in the supplied IFR comparison. Automotive customers installed 135,461 industrial robots worldwide in 2023, nearly matching 136,112 in 2022, and represented 25% of all installations in both years.
Automotive installations grew at a 2% average annual rate from 2018 through 2023. (IFR, “Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 Industrial Robots”)
| Customer industry | 2023 installations | 2023 share or change |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive | 135,461 | 25% of installations |
| Electrical and electronics | 125,804 | -20%; 23% share |
| Metal and machinery | 76,831 | +16%; 14% share |
Electrical and electronics industries installed 156,936 robots in 2022, so the 2023 total of 125,804 was five percentage points lower as a share of installations. Metal and machinery installations grew at an average 12% annually from 2018 through 2023. (IFR, “Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 Industrial Robots”)
Professional Service Robotics by Application
Professional service robots are a separate population from factory industrial robots. IFR reported more than 205,000 professional service robots sold worldwide in 2023, up 30%; more than half were used to transport goods or cargo, and transportation and logistics sales grew 35%. (IFR, “Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 – Service Robots”)
Application figures for 2023 included:
- Hospitality robots exceeded 54,000 units sold worldwide, up 31%.
- Agricultural robots sold almost 20,000 units worldwide, up 21%.
- Professional cleaning-robot sales were almost 12,000 units, up 4%.
- Search, rescue and security robots totaled 3,475 units sold, up 12%.
- Autonomous inspection and maintenance robots sold almost 400 units, up 67%; the category excludes devices that do not autonomously conduct the task.
- Construction and demolition service-robot sales grew 58%, although the source did not state an absolute sales total.
Robot-as-a-service (RaaS) describes leasing, hiring or a comparable service model rather than transfer of robot hardware ownership. The professional-service RaaS fleet grew 24% to more than 7,700 units worldwide in 2023, while the transportation and logistics RaaS fleet exceeded 5,000 units after 20% growth; the cleaning-robot RaaS fleet totaled 2,369 units after 29% growth. (IFR, “Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 – Service Robots”)
Medical, Consumer and Supplier Robotics Statistics
Medical-robot sales increased 36% to almost 6,200 units worldwide in 2023. IFR was aware of 921 service-robot producers worldwide in its 2024 service-robot summary, but that known-company count excluded prototyping services and system integrators and was not a census of sales. (IFR, “Executive Summary World Robotics 2024 – Service Robots”)
The later World Robotics 2025 service-robot release reported sample-based 2024 figures from 294 suppliers:
| 2024 service-robot measure | Worldwide result |
|---|---|
| Professional service robots sold | Almost 200,000, up 9% |
| Transportation and logistics | 102,900, up 14% |
| Professional cleaning robots | More than 25,000, up 34% |
| Medical robots | Around 16,700, up 91% |
| Consumer service robots | Close to 20 million, up 11% |
Within the 2024 medical-robot sample, rehabilitation and non-invasive therapy robot sales increased 106%, surgery-robot demand increased 41%, and diagnostics and medical-laboratory robot sales increased 610%. The diagnostics rate reflects high growth from a smaller base. (IFR, “World Robotics 2025 report – SERVICE ROBOTS – released by IFR”)
Consumer service-robot sales in Europe and Asia-Pacific each grew 16% in 2024, while sales in the Americas decreased 1%. These figures, like the other 2024 service-robot results, come from a sample of 294 suppliers. (IFR, “World Robotics 2025 report – SERVICE ROBOTS – released by IFR”)
The service-robot populations must not be added to industrial-robot totals: IFR distinguishes industrial, professional service, medical and consumer service robots. The 2024 service-robot report uses registered data and known suppliers, is not projected to the whole industry, and warns that sample composition varies by year, limiting direct comparison across reports.
